People do the darndest things

As you most likely know by now, with parent company Foot Locker’s backing, CCS is making rapid strides into the skate and snow brick-and-mortar retail world. The company now has stores in Santa Monica, California, Paramus, New Jersey, and Orlando, Florida, and new stores will be opening in Austin, Texas in May and Raleigh, North Carolina in June. It’s definitely safe to say that they’re setting their sites on national dom-mall-nation and are aiming to go head to head with the core retailers and the Zumiez’s of the land.

I recently got an email from Todd Canipe, owner of Raleigh’s Vertical Urge skate shop, that’s a great wake up call about the new shark in the tank:

A “recruiter” from CCS/Champs/Foot Locker came into MY shop and park yesterday, handing out fliers to all MY kids encouraging them to apply for an ”exciting new opportunity” at the CCS flagship store that will be opening next month. Yes, he came into our store to recruit our kids.

I’m not trying to bitch and moan, but to warn everyone of the impact this can have on all of us — reps, shop owners, anyone associated with our industry on a core level. CCS doesn’t and won’t play by the rules we’ve all grown accustomed to so be ready. I’m sure each and every one of you will have to deal with this over the course of the next two to four years. Let’s face it, every mall has at least one Foot Locker, Champs, Lady Foot Locker, etc. that is under performing. Foot Locker (CCS’s parent company for anyone who has been living under a rock for the last few years) can’t wait to bring their “skate shop” to every single mall in America, attempting to eradicate you and I in the process. And unfortunately, there’s no shortage of manufacturers that are probably foaming at the mouth with what this new ”distribution” can bring to them.

I have known about CCS coming to Raleigh for almost six months now, and we’re ready to deal with them. However, I’m surprised at how many other shops I talk with about this have a “this won’t happen in my area” attitude. While I think we all can and will be successful with CCS in our market, make no mistake, CCS is not Pac Sun or even Zumiez. Just be smart about your business and prepared, and you will come out on top.

HELLO Future
we better get our axe on with this going on.

R.I.P Keith "Guru" Elam (July 17, 1966 – April 19, 2010)

Groundbreaking U.S. rapper and Gang Starr co-founder Guru died Monday night, a month after the cancer-stricken artist collapsed and went into a coma, MTV reported. The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Elam, had been suffering from cancer for over a year. The report quoted a statement from Guru's camp that inferred the cause was complications from cancer.
“According to [producer] Solar, Guru suffered from the malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed, the legendary MC succumbed to the disease. Guru always tried to keep this harrowing diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by the disease.”
Guru formed the group with DJ Premier in 1985, and they put out six albums, including the well-received "Daily Operation" and "Moment of Truth."
